Sexual Assault

Sexual assault can happen to anyone; men, women and children. The effect that it has on people will vary and different people may feel the impact of assault at different times. If you have been raped or sexually assaulted, either recently or in the past, there is confidential support available to you. You will not be forced to report the assault to the police but may be helped to do so if this is what you wish.

If you choose to report a recent attack to the police, the police will arrange for you to have a medical examination. This is to ensure that you receive the necessary medical attention, but also to collect any physical evidence.
It’s important to remember that if you report a sexual offence immediately after it has happened, the police have an increased chance of collecting evidence. If you report an attack later its likely any physical evidence may be lost.
Whether or not you wish to report the assault, you should still get help with emergency contraception (females) and advice around sexually transmitted infections.
